Health is Wealth

January 2022 started with jumping into a goal with both feet. Last April 2021 I started my fitness journey back. Started with a 6 km walk. That walk showed me how I let Ironman fitness turn into couch potato fitness. It happens slowly. But it does happen. I continued the rest of 2021 walking and then some easy mileage running. This December I watched a show called 14 Peaks, Nothing is Impossible. (Fearless Nepali mountaineer Nimsdai Purja embarks on a seemingly impossible quest to summit all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in seven months.)

This inspired me to start January 2022 off on the right foot so to speak. So I set a goal to do 100 Miles which equals 160 km. I wanted to see how long it took me. Today I finished my 14 outing of 12 km each time to have completed 168km total. It feels good. The hills on the route are easier. River valley hills! Great scenery. Along the river. Watching the river turn to ice; then melt. Our bipolar mother! From -38° C to +9°C temperatures during this time period.

Wind, snow, icy paths, clouds and sun. I forget sometimes I’m from Saskatchewan. I grew up in harsh winter temps. As the Vikings say, “ I seem to relish the most distasteful weather”….Also my nomadic hunter gatherer blood . It’s in my veins. It’s encoded into my DNA.

I’m going to continue on this journey back to fitness. Maybe even run a few races later this year.

14 Peaks planted a seed to travel to Nepal. Hike to base camp at Everest. Not to climb it. But to stand there at the base to see

the highest mountain in the world! To stand where Mallory, Hillary and Norgay stood and looked up.

This adventure will be 3-4years out. But it’s a new goal. A reward to myself. Nothing is Impossible. Just takes planning and execution. Where there’s a will there’s a way! The way so far has only been 12km outings. But the mileage adds up!

Doing it this way also prevents overuse injuries. Maybe there’s an Ironman race still left in this body. I wonder if Everest has a swim start?
